Ryan Ball: Engineering a New Path in Logistics

From a partial scholarship in mechanical engineering to the helm of a logistics transformation, Ryan Ball (’08) is proving that the best business opportunities are often found in “unsexy” industries. In this week’s episode, tune in as we sit down with the SMU Lyle School of Engineering alumnus and CEO of Rockwall Services to discuss his unconventional journey. Ryan shares how his engineering background provides the framework for his problem solving today, despite realizing early on that a traditional defense contracting desk was not the right fit for his gregarious personality.

From Search Funds to Success

After navigating roles in film distribution and software startups, and earning his MBA in 2018, Ryan utilized a “search fund” strategy to find his next venture. After evaluating 37 potential deals, he acquired Rockwall Services in November 2023. Rather than changing things overnight, Ryan spent his first months as an apprentice, shadowing every employee to understand the grit of the business. Since then, he has transformed the company from a traditional freight brokerage into a fractional transportation department, pivoting the team into “utility players” who can handle any challenge.

Modernizing the Tech Debt

Ryan is currently tackling the logistics industry’s massive “tech debt” by developing proprietary software through Remington Software. By focusing on user interface and professional communication, he is modernizing a sector that has long relied on outdated, counter intuitive systems.

Key Takeaways from Ryan

Ryan advises looking for “unsexy” industries because those with high tech debt are fertile ground for innovation and career growth. He also emphasizes that due diligence is key; when evaluating a deal, look for reasons to say “no” rather than forcing a “yes.” Finally, he believes a success in logistics relies on an integrity first model with fair flat rate pricing and being proactive when challenges arise.
