OPENING THOUGHTS: A HISTORIC WIN
Kyle Padrone:
Welcome back to The QB Chronicles. I’m Kyle Padrone, joined as always by my good buddy, Garrett Gilbert. We’re breaking down SMU’s 26–20 overtime win over #10 Miami — the program’s first victory over an AP Top-10 team since 1983 and the first in Dallas since 1974.
The atmosphere was electric. The student section showed up, Miami fans traveled well, and the Boulevard was bumping before and after the game. After the field rush, the goalpost somehow ended up in the fountain. Unbelievable scene.
Garrett:
Couldn’t agree more. I wasn’t there because my wife’s due any day now, but even watching from home, it felt special. SMU made plays when it mattered — key defensive stops, timely turnovers, and the confidence to punch it in for six instead of settling for a field goal in overtime.
DEFENSIVE DOMINANCE
Kyle:
The defense deserves the spotlight. They’ve been the story all year — bend-but-don’t-break, then deliver when it counts. Ahmad Moses came up huge again with a pair of interceptions, including one in overtime that swung the game.
The coverage was noticeably tighter than in past weeks — fewer explosive plays, cleaner communication. Even without heavy pressure on Miami’s quarterback, the secondary held up strong and forced mistakes. It’s clear this unit has found its rhythm at the right time.
OFFENSIVE RESURGENCE
Garrett:
The passing game finally opened up again. Jordan Hudson was unstoppable — 11 catches for 136 yards, plucking the ball out of the air like a pro. He’s got that Emmanuel Sanders-type swagger; even when he’s covered, he’s open.
Kevin Jennings was gritty as hell. Still dealing with an ankle injury, but threw for over 360 yards and three total touchdowns. There was a moment when he came up limping and threw his helmet — you could tell he was in pain — but he fought through it. The guy’s toughness set the tone for everyone.
Kyle:
You could tell he trusted his protection more this week. That confidence showed on throws like the touchdown to Ymir Knight — he manipulated the defense and hit him wide open despite the late release. His deep ball to Hudson in regulation was perfectly placed, and their chemistry is only growing.
SITUATIONAL EXCELLENCE: TWO-MINUTE DRIVE
Garrett:
One of the most impressive sequences was the two-minute drill to tie it at the end of regulation. With no timeouts and just over two minutes left, Kevin stayed poised — hit short throws, got out of bounds when needed, and managed the clock like a vet.
Kyle:
Fans underestimate how much goes into that. Everyone needs to know time, distance, and the situation. If you’re inside the numbers, you get down and hand the ball to the ref; outside the numbers, get out of bounds. Kevin and the offense executed it beautifully — that drive turned a 49-yard kick into a 38-yarder, which made all the difference.
Garrett:
That’s textbook complementary football — offense giving the kicker a shot, defense getting the stop. The growth from the Baylor and Wake Forest losses was obvious.
PADRONE SHOT OF THE GAME (Presented by Socorro Tequila)
Kyle:
This week’s Padrone Shot of the Game, presented by Socorro Tequila, goes to Ymir Knight for his 28-yard touchdown catch — a perfect example of trust between quarterback and receiver. Critical drive, perfect execution.
Garrett:
Shoutout to Jordan Hudson and Kevin Jennings too — both worthy of player of the game nods. But Ahmad Moses gets mine for those two massive interceptions. He flat-out won the turnover battle by himself.
AROUND COLLEGE FOOTBALL
Garrett:
Plenty of chaos around the country this week. Georgia hung on against Florida, Texas handled Vanderbilt, and Notre Dame survived Boston College. Oklahoma took down Tennessee, and Utah dismantled Cincinnati, silencing the “Cinderella” talk.
yle:
West Virginia also upset Houston — tough one for our friends down there. Meanwhile, USC pulled out a 21–17 road win at Nebraska in a blackout game.
Garrett:
Yeah, wild weekend in the ACC too — Virginia held off Cal, while NC State handed Georgia Tech its first loss. That means Virginia’s the last unbeaten in league play… technically.
Kyle:
Right — they actually lost to NC State earlier this year in a non-conference ACC matchup. It’s weird and kinda BS, but that’s how the schedule worked out.
LOOKING AHEAD
Garrett:
Next week, Preston Stone and the Ponies travel to Boston College. The Eagles just went toe-to-toe with Notre Dame, so that’s no layup.
Kyle:
Elsewhere, GameDay heads to Lubbock for #8 BYU at #9 Texas Tech. Texas A&M visits Missouri, Wake Forest travels to Virginia, and Cal heads to Louisville. Should be another fun slate.
Garrett:
We’ll be back soon with our Pat and Go preview of SMU vs. Boston College.
Kyle: Until then—Pony Up.
